Treatment of hepatitis.3 There have been no animal or human studies on propolis as a treatment for hepatitis. God's Remedy God's Remedy is a group of products advertised to treat hepatitis C. The products are alcohol based liquid extracts of plants. Products in the group include Pure Herbal RemedyTM, Milk ThistleTM, HepacureTM, Immune BoosterTM, and Energy FormulaTM. The Pure Herbal RemedyTM formula is advertised as an antioxidant supplement. It is said to contain burdock root, nettle, red clover blossom, ginseng root, echinacea root, yellow dock root, gingko leaf, dandelion root, blessed thistle, schizandra, astragalus root, olive leaf, plaintain, and milk thistle. The text explains that the phytochemicals found in the plants are potent antioxidants and stimulate the human immune system. Although this statement is true in that phytochemicals called flavinoids are highly potent antioxidants, more potent than nutrients like zinc, vitamin E and vitamin C, not all plants contain flavinoids. With the exception of schizandra, astragalus, and milk thistle, the plants contained in Pure Herbal RemedyTM are not known for their high flavinoid content. Unfortunately, there are no published studies looking at the effects of the flavinoids contained in these plants among people with hepatitis C. Hopefully, these studies will be done in the future. The milk thistle product is also a liquid extract. No information about the silymarin or silybin content of the product is mentioned, so it is difficult to know the potency of this extract. Silymarin is the active ingredient in milk thistle, and all the clinical trials involving milk thistle used a specific amount of silymarin. See Chapter 13: Naturopathic Medicine for additional information on silymarin. HepacureTM is another product sold by this producer that is claimed to be similar to HepaticoTM. See HepaticoTM in this chapter for information about this product. ; The text explaining this product refers to clinical trials with HepaticoTM in Russia quoting, "a 91% success rate" in hepatitis and some degree of reversal of cirrhosis in 1-7 months. The text goes on to say the product has been researched and is safe for treatment of acute and chronic forms of hepatitis A, B, and C, and cirrhosis and liver cancer. However, there is no reference to the source of this information. It is also unclear where this product was researched and how it was determined to be safe. As mentioned in the section under HepaticoTM, none of the references mentioned were published studies. The only published study we found was an animal study looking at the toxicity of the plants in HepaticoTM. The ingredients listed for HepacureTM are very different from the original HepaticoTM formula. The ingredients given for HepacureTM are nettle, plaintain, horsetail, yarrow, golden rod, chamomile, feikhoa batsu, fern, ekala, pau d'arco, cleaver, black Indian hemp, and mayapple in a base of milk thistle, dandelion, and turmeric root. The Immune BoosterTM formula contains goldenseal root, red clover blooms, yellow dock root, burdock root, witch hazel, wild American ginseng, capsicum, pau d'arco, and echinacea. The Immune BoosterTM formula text states, "Numerous studies have shown that these remarkable natural substances stimulate our immune system's ability to recognize and surround foreign matter and eliminate it at a cellular level." The only actual published data looking at the immune stimulating effects of these plants has been with echinacea, berberine the active ingredient in goldenseal ; , burdock root, and pau d'arco Tecoma curialis ; . Short of that, any label change sought by the agency has to be negotiated with manufacturers, a process that sometimes takes more than a year. Testifying before Congress in March, Dr. Sandra Kweder, the F.D.A.'s deputy director of the office of new drugs, bemoaned such delays and said having the power to mandate label changes "would be very helpful." Even without that power from Congress, the F.D.A. has recently made moves to disclose concerns about drugs' adverse effects before label negotiations with drug makers are complete. The government and Johnson & Johnson negotiated for five years before the company pulled Propulsid. By then, the federal government had reports of 80 heart-related deaths and 341 injuries among patients taking Propulsid. First Signs of Trouble The first signs of trouble emerged soon after Propulsid was approved in 1993 for the treatment of nighttime heartburn in adults. By January 1995, the F.D.A. received reports of 18 Propulsid patients who had developed serious heart arrhythmias; one patient, an infant, had died. At a private meeting that month, agency officials told Johnson & Johnson executives that the drug was causing life-threatening arrhythmias, according to F.D.A. minutes of the meeting. Company executives insisted that such problems occurred only in patients who took Propulsid with other drugs or who had heart problems. The company sent two letters to doctors and added warnings to the drug's label listing drugs that should not be used with Propulsid. But by July 1996, regulators had reports of 57 Propulsid patients, including seven children, who had developed serious arrhythmias or other heart problems. In August 1997, after the company told the F.D.A. that two more children taking the drug had died, a top agency official wrote to the company that Propulsid's growing number of cardiac problems among infants and children "suggests that pediatric patients may be at greater risk for them." Johnson & Johnson had previously conducted pediatric studies of Propulsid that failed to demonstrate that the drug was effective. In January 1995, the F.D.A. told the company that without studies showing that the drug worked in children it would not receive approval for pediatric sales. Johnson & Johnson never applied for such approval and the label did not recommend it for use in children. But doctors are free to prescribe medicines beyond the confines of labels, and Propulsid became popular among pediatricians. By 1998, doctors were writing more than half a million prescriptions a year for children and infants, according to internal company estimates. The company has said that its cherry-flavored liquid Propulsid was developed for and dexamethasone.

Oral hygiene, improvement of oral health status, moderation of smoking and drinking would decrease the number of carieses and neoplastic diseases. If there is no improvement in the primary and secondary prevention of these diseases, an ever growing number of inflammations and their sequels as well as neoplastic diseases will have to be treated with the methods available today. Our investigations have confirmed that reactive oxygen intermediaries may be responsible for the tissue destruction in the defence mechanism of the often symptom-free periapical lesion. The human organism living with an inflammation may adversely react to an environmental change that a healthy organism does not perceive. Simple events, like weather changes, weather fronts may overthrow the balance and induce surgical intervention or tooth removal. With an increase in the number of lost teeth, the masticatory apparatus cannot ensure proper chewing of the food, which leads to digestive disturbances. Prosthetic dentistry provides several solutions for the substitution of lost teeth but most of these devices are removable. Efavirenz is administered currently as three 200 mg capsules once-daily. Efavirenz should not be administered concurrently with Hismanal astemizole ; , Propulsid cisapride ; , Versed midazolam ; , Halcion triazolam ; or ergot derivatives. Current treatment guidelines recommend against the use of any antiretroviral agent as monotherapy. Therefore, efavirenz must not be used as a single agent to treat HIV or added on as a sole agent to a failing regimen. The choice of new antiretroviral agents to be used in combination with efavirenz should take into consideration the potential for viral crossresistance. Efavirenz therapy should always be initiated in combination with at least one other antiretroviral agent to which the patient has not been previously exposed.
