Isoflavones belong to a class of compounds known as flavonoids.

SCIENTIFIC NAMES: Glycyrrhiza glabra COMMON NAMES: Licorice COMMON USES: Infections, inflammation, menstrual disorders, ulcers, canker sores, herpes, eczema, and psoriasis Licorice is an herb with antiallergic, antiviral, antibacterial, and expectorant properties among others. Licorice root is one of the most used and investigated herbal medicines. Its medicinal use dates back several thousand years, and it has historically been used as a mild laxative, and for the treatment of ulcers, asthma, insomnia, infections, and abdominal pain. There are three main clinical uses of licorice: oral preparations containing glycyrrhetinic acid, deglycyrrhizinated licorice or DGL, and topical preparations with glycyrrhetinic acid. The first preparation is used predominately in viral infections, inflammation, and menstrual disorders like PMS. The second fights ulcerative conditions, and the last, topical applications, can be used for herpes and similar problems. Licorice stimulates interferon, the body's natural antiviral compound, into increased activity. Glycyrrihizin, a property of licorice also inhibits the growth of certain DNA and RNA viruses like herpes complex. And besides fighting the common cold by stimulating the immune system, licorice has been studied extensively for its effects on the immune reactions in AIDS patients. Patients given glycyrrhizin showed almost immediate improvement in immune function--increased helper T cell counts, improved helper-tosuppressor T cell ratios and better function in the liver. The estrogenic activity of licorice is also impressive. The effects licorice has on estrogen metabolism are two-fold. If estrogen levels in the body are above normal, licorice will prevent production to help normalize levels; however, if estrogen levels fall below the norm, licorice will also stimulate increased estrogen production to bring the levels back into equilibrium. This is due to the isoflavone content in licorice. There have also been numerous studies and a great deal of research done on the beneficial effects of licorice on inflammation and ulcer conditions, as well as the positive results as a topical preparation for herpes and similar problems. Licorice reduces swelling, encourages healing and speeds up the time it takes for healing to occur. Taking one to two grams of the powered root three times a day is a safe dose. However, licorice may cause sodium and water retention or hypertension. If you are prone to high blood pressure, or have a history of hypertension or renal failure get the advice of a health care professional before beginning licorice supplementation. TH.

The primary professional is responsible for transporting and installing the Monitoring System in the patient's home. B. All staff shall be knowledgeable regarding the safe transport, cleaning, and storage of the Monitoring System. 1. Prior to transporting the Monitoring System to a patient's home: a. Notify Central Station clinician and Admin Support of new patient and time and day wk that patient will be monitoring b. Inspect each component of the Monitoring System to insure that all surfaces are clean and free from physical damage c. Assemble Monitor on a clean, dry surface and verify that the Monitor is operating properly d. Sign out Monitor scale on Inventory Log sheet e. Pre-program the Monitor to facilitate home installation f. Document necessary information on the Equipment Loan and Monitor Installation Form g. Transport monitor and all accessories in a clean plastic bag and in a designated carrying case h. Return carrying case to EMP unit 2. Discontinuation of Monitoring System services: a. Clinical trials are still at an early stage for genistein and related compounds, with very few results published, even of a preliminary nature. A Phase I trial gave a form of genistein: 'B43-genistein' - stated to be a tyrosine kinase inhibitor - to 15 acute or chronic leukaemia patients who had 'failed standard therapy' AACR, 1999 ; . The report states cites the drug's 'acceptable toxicity profile' and improvement or remission in three patients. It is not a peer-reviewed paper but a conference presentation abstract, and does not reveal the nature of the compound, the quantities administered, the route of administration, the duration of the trial or which patients appeared to benefit. Another paper - again not a scientific journal article - reports a trial which measured levels of prostate-specific antigen PSA ; in 30 clinically stable prostate cancer patients Barkin et al., 2000 ; . It states that patients using a fermented soya drink for six months had a slower PSA increase than controls and patients given concentrated isoflavones, but PSA responses did not correlate with plasma genistein levels. EPS genistein levels and cancer progression are not reported. PSA levels do not necessarily correlate with cancer proliferation Adlercreutz, 2002 ; . An original research communication on prostate cancer states that twenty patients treated for 28-56 days with high doses of genistein 300-600 mg per day ; showed no significant genotoxicity arising from the treatment Miltyk et al., 2003 ; . The researchers report that there were no rearrangements of the MLL gene see Section 6 ; in the three patients examined for such mutations. Plasma genistein levels did not exceed 0.32 M despite the very high intake, although a level of 27.1 M was recorded for 'total genistein', apparently meaning conjugated and unconjugated forms combined. Again, EPS genistein levels are not reported.
