Upon its incorporation in 1928, Beecham plc purchased the Beecham Pills business founded by Thomas Beecham in 1842. During the 1930s and the post-war period the company assembled a group of established UK brand names including Macleans toothpaste, Eno antacids, the Brylcreem and Silvikrin lines of hair care products, and Lucozade and Ribena drinks. In 1986 about 80% of Beecham's profits still came from brand names which were over 60 years old, and even in the late 1980s Beecham was still regarded -- both internally and externally -- as a consumer products-focused firm.
